Lee Memorial Hall has been awarded Hallmark 1 and 2. Hallmark is a national quality assurance award for community buildings which recognises high standards of facilities and management. Lee, on the North Devon coast, is fortunate to possess a fine village hall. The original Hall is a splendid structure, built in 1923 as a memorial to those in the village who gave their lives for their country during the First World War. It is a lovely stone built building that blends very well into the beautiful valley in which the village is situated. It is in a conservation area within the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is opposite the delightful parish church of St Matthew. Adjacent to the Hall is a privately owned car park which is sufficient for the needs of most occasions when the Hall is used. Over the winter of 2009/10, very extensive refurbishment and new building took place at the Hall to provide outstanding facilities. The Hall was reopened in March 2010 following this work. The original Hall has been redecorated, but the new buildings now provide a brand new, large and very well equipped kitchen, excellent new toilets, a purpose built disabled toilet with baby changing facilities, and notable improvements to the stage and committee room. These new and refurbished buildings replace the previous life-expired ones and provide the Hall with first-rate facilities conforming to all modern requirements. They have been built to very high standards and, externally, the new buildings, with a pitched slate roof and stone walls, complement very well the original 1923 building. As well as the Hall, the Trustees own the large adjacent meadow which was left to the village by a benefactor a number of years ago. The meadow is also a delightful place where anyone can relax and enjoy the beauty of the area. There is a small but well used children’s play area. The meadow is used for events such as the Spring Fayre and, subject to conditions, can be used to erect a marquee. The Hall is used extensively by village organisations. Regular users include the Parent and Toddler Group (the Mini-Monsters!), Lee Women’s Institute, Pilates classes, St Matthew’s Church, the Fuchsia Valley Quilters, the Residents’ Association and the Flower Show. The Hall Committee organises regular social events such as Race and Quiz nights as well as days when light lunches and cream teas are served. Highlights of the year include the Spring Fayre and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition, held in August each year. As well as use for village organisations and events, the Hall welcomes bookings from individuals and groups from North Devon and elsewhere. Charges are very modest. The Hall is a favourite location for children’s parties and wedding receptions. The maximum capacity of the Hall is 75 for a seated function. The Hall is situated in the centre of the small coastal village of Lee in North Devon. It is about 3 miles from Ilfracombe and 5 miles from Woolacombe. The South West Coast Path passes through the village and the Hall is about 500 yards from the sea at Lee Bay. Both the Hall and the village are within a steep sided valley often known as Fuchsia Valley. From Ilfracombe take the road signposted to Lee off the A361 just beyond the traffic lights at the south-west end of the main street in Ilfracombe. Follow the signs to Lee. After passing through Slade the road rises steeply before levelling off. About 2 miles from Ilfracombe, turn right at the road junction. After passing through Lincombe, the road descends steeply before levelling out again. It then drops into the main part of the village, passing the Hall meadow on the left before reaching the Hall and adjacent car park. St Matthew's Church is immediately opposite the Hall. From the Barnstaple direction, take the A361 as far as the Mullacott Cross roundabout, about 11 miles north of Barnstaple. Turn left at the roundabout on to the B3343 Woolacombe road. Lee is also named on the signposts. After about 1.5 miles turn right on to the road signposted Lincombe and Lee. The road is narrow but there are a reasonable number of passing places. After a further 1.5 miles, turn left at the road junction. After passing through Lincombe, the road descends steeply before levelling out. It then drops into the main part of the village, passing the Hall meadow on the left before reaching the Hall and adjacent car park. St Matthew's Church is immediately opposite the Hall.

£20 per session (Lower rates for village residents and organisations). £200, including setting up beforehand and clearing up the following day, for major functions such as wedding receptions. Additional charge for erecting marquee on meadow.
